One of the first municipalities in Rioja to regenerate their vineyards after the phylloxera scourge that had come from France was Fuenmayor.

This town is located on the easternmost part of Rioja Alta and, to return the town to its former wealth, the grape growers of the time invested their work and wisdom in bringing forth plantations of Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Viura and Garnacha grapes grafted onto American rootstock. Among those growers and winemakers who were ready to bravely face the changes affecting the wine sector at the turn of the century was Don Luis Foncea, grandfather of the founder of Bodegas Vallemayor, Don Luis Pérez Foncea.
